Hyundai diesel sets are popular as home and small-business standby in Gauteng. We diagnose the start circuit, fuel system, cooling, panel and output in turn.
The fuel on the data plate decides the visit. Petrol Hyundai sets, such as the HG range, follow a different diagnosis on our petrol service.
On an air-cooled DHY set, a service covers the oil, the air and fuel filters and the cooling fins rather than coolant, plus the battery and the starter. Water-cooled Hyundai sets also get the coolant and radiator checked.
Every service includes a review of the diesel panel’s alarms.
Hyundai’s smaller DHY diesel sets are built around air-cooled engines. The DHY6000SE is a 6.5 kVA (5.2 kW) silent set with a 420 cc single-cylinder engine running at 3,000 rpm, a 16 L tank and electric start. The 6 kW DHY8000SE added an AVR and a port for an automatic transfer switch, and has been replaced in some markets by the long-run DHY8000SELR with a 30 L tank. Larger Hyundai diesel sets may be water-cooled, so send a photo of the plate and we will confirm the model and kVA.
When a DHY set only clicks, the battery is the first suspect: a single-cylinder diesel needs a strong battery to turn over against its compression.
A DHY that turns over without firing usually has air or dirt in its fuel. We bleed the line, check the filter at the tank outlet and confirm fuel reaches the injector.
The small DHY fuel system starves quickly, so we check the fuel itself for water and dirt as well as the filter.
Black smoke or labouring when the house load comes on usually means the set is near its limit or the air filter is blocked, and we check both before we look at the injector.
We note what the DHY panel shows, including any warning lights, and record the running hours before we reset anything.
When a standby set runs but the building does not transfer, we test the ATS and the panel’s start output.
For overheating on an air-cooled DHY, we check the cooling fins, the fan and the airflow through the canopy, because there is no radiator. On a water-cooled set, we check the coolant, the radiator and the fan belt.
With the engine at its governed 3,000 rpm, we measure the output at the sockets and the breaker, then test the AVR on models that have one.
On a Hyundai DHY set, we check the engine, the panel and the alternator against what you noticed when it failed.
Book a repair when your DHY will not start, smokes heavily, overheats or gives no power at the sockets.
Book a service by the running hours in the manual, even if the set still starts, because a small air-cooled engine depends on clean oil.
A Hyundai diesel can idle evenly and struggle once the house or shop load comes on. We compare fuel delivery and alternator capacity with the load applied.
A battery, filter or AVR repair on a DHY with moderate hours is usually worth it. A major engine repair on a small single-cylinder set can approach the price of a new one, and we tell you when it does.
If both the engine and the alternator need major work, we put the price of a replacement set next to the repair.
On a DHY set, most bills are for the battery, the fuel system or the AVR: an AVR replacement typically costs R2,200 to R9,000 and a battery R900 to R2,800.
The Hyundai DHY faults we are called about most, with our first check for each.
A charger that has not kept the battery topped up between outages.
Air or dirt in the fuel, the tank-outlet filter or the fuel solenoid.
Blocked cooling fins or canopy airflow on air-cooled sets; coolant and radiator on water-cooled ones.
The ATS connection on ATS-ready models, or the start signal it sends.
Engine speed below 3,000 rpm first, then the AVR or the alternator.

Yes. Petrol Hyundai sets have their own service, Hyundai petrol generator repairs.
Usually a weak battery or air in the fuel. If it starts and then stops, check the oil level with the set on level ground.
Yes. We change the oil and filters, clean the cooling fins on air-cooled engines and test the battery and starter.
Hyundai diesel models start DHY; petrol models, such as the HG6000E, start HG. The plate confirms it, or send us a photo.
