Perkins diesel
We repair and service Perkins-powered diesel generators on site across Johannesburg, Pretoria and Gauteng. Your canopy may say FG Wilson, Olympian or another brand, but the Perkins engine plate tells us which filters, lift pump and fuel parts to bring. For a breakdown, we arrive within 1 hour.
Independent service and repair: Perkins is a trademark of its owner, and ProService Generator Repairs is not a Perkins dealer or agent.

Most Perkins work we do is on generator sets built by someone else around a Perkins diesel. FG Wilson, Olympian and many other canopies hide a Perkins block underneath, so we read the engine plate first and the canopy badge second.
That split matters for the quote. Engine faults follow the Perkins plate, while panel and transfer faults follow the controller fitted by the set builder, and we price each one separately.
Perkins-powered standby sets are everywhere in Gauteng: behind homes and townhouse complexes in the northern suburbs, at offices in Johannesburg and Pretoria, and in factories on the East and West Rand. We come to your site and work on the set where it stands.
The common Perkins standby faults we see are flat batteries after months without an outage, blocked filters and air in the lift-pump line, and DSE panels holding a shutdown alarm from the last run.
We change oil and filters to the Perkins engine schedule on the plate, and we test the canopy battery charger, because standby Perkins sets often fail to crank after months of standing.
A monthly unloaded run does not prove cooling or transfer. If the set has barely run since the last outage, we also check lift-pump function and the age of the diesel in the tank.
Perkins groups its generator engines into series by size. In its power generation range, the 400 Series (0.5 to 2.2 litres) covers about 4 to 32 kW prime power, the 1100 Series (3.3 to 7.0 litres) about 29 to 180 kW, the 2000 Series (12.5 to 18.1 litres) about 305 to 716 kW and the 4000 Series (23 to 61 litres) about 638 to 1,875 kW, with standby ratings a little higher. Perkins also lists 1200, 1500, 1700 and 5000 Series engines.
The series shows in the engine model on the Perkins plate: a 403A-11G1, for example, is a small 400 Series engine. Home and small business sets usually carry a 400 or 1100 Series engine, while office parks, hospitals and plants run the larger series. The series decides the filters, the fuel system and the parts lead time.
Perkins diesels power everything from workshop sets to large commercial canopies built by FG Wilson, Olympian and many others. We match parts to the engine plate and serial number, and parts carry the supplier’s warranty where one applies. A photo of both the engine plate and the generator plate saves a trip.
A Perkins set that will not crank usually has a flat standby battery, loose terminals or a DSE panel holding the start off after a shutdown alarm.
Strong cranking with no fire usually means fuel is not reaching the injectors: a blocked filter, air in the line or a weak lift pump. The starter is rarely the problem in that case.
A weak lift pump shows up as long cranking before the engine fires. We check for filter restriction from old diesel before we talk about injectors, and a fuel filter costs far less than an injector.
Blue or black smoke under load can point to one cylinder, but a blocked filter or water in the tank can mimic injector faults. We let the test result decide the quote.
We photograph the Deep Sea or SmartGen panel on your Perkins set before we move a cable, and we read shutdown codes for the panel actually fitted.
When the Perkins engine runs but the building never leaves mains, we trace the ATS and start-interlock wiring separately from the fuel solenoid on the engine.
Overheat trips on enclosed Perkins sets often come from a packed radiator face or louvres blocked by dust. We confirm coolant level and fan operation with the set stopped and cool.
We test voltage once engine speed is stable, then the breaker, AVR and alternator. Your alternator may be a Stamford, Leroy-Somer or another make, and its plate decides the electrical parts.
We check the Perkins engine, the canopy and the controller as three parts of one job.
Book a repair when the engine will not start, shuts down under load, shows a latched controller alarm or loses output during an outage, whatever brand the canopy carries.
Book a service when oil, filters or coolant are due and the set still runs. Read us the exact controller warning when you call.
A Perkins engine in an FG Wilson canopy can idle smoothly and then hunt or smoke once the building load comes on. We compare fuel delivery, canopy airflow and alternator load on a test run and under real load.
A Perkins with moderate hours and a sound block usually justifies a fuel or battery repair. Major bottom-end work is a different decision, and we weigh it against replacing the complete canopy set.
On older installations, a new controller and canopy can cost more than the engine repair. We give you the options after we have assessed the engine and alternator.
Perkins jobs often involve three assemblies: the engine, the canopy controller and the alternator. A fuel filter replacement typically costs R300 to R800, while a fuel pump runs R1,800 to R4,500, so finding the real fault keeps your bill down.
These are the Perkins standby faults we find most often, and where we look for each one.
We follow the Perkins plate for fuel and filter work and the canopy controller for panel faults.
Stale diesel, a blocked filter or air in the lift-pump line is the usual cause.
The engine is healthy, but the ATS never receives or acts on the start signal.
We test fuel delivery, canopy airflow and the alternator load.
We test the AVR and alternator once the Perkins holds governed speed.
We note the canopy brand, then follow the Perkins engine plate for fuel and filter work.
Wilson or Olympian controller faults get their own line, so you see exactly what each repair costs.
Sets that barely run get battery, fuel and coolant checks even when the hour meter looks low.

Yes. We repair Perkins-powered generators on site in Johannesburg, Pretoria and across Gauteng, 24 hours a day. For a breakdown, we arrive within 1 hour.
The canopy and the engine are often different brands. We check whether the Perkins cranks or cranks without firing, and we read the Wilson controller for shutdown alarms.
Yes. We service the engine to the Perkins schedule and check the controller and ATS against the Olympian panel, quoting each separately when needed.
Strong cranking with no fire usually means fuel is not reaching the injectors because of a blocked filter, air in the line or a weak lift pump.
Yes. We record smoke and rough running, then test the fuel path before we condemn an injector.
Send a photo of the Perkins engine plate and the controller label, plus the kVA and any alarm text. That lets us bring the right filters and parts.
