Home generators
Every kind of home generator, repaired where it stands
Home generators in Gauteng are a mix. Many households bought a petrol portable or a quiet inverter during load shedding; larger homes run a diesel or gas standby set that starts by itself when the power fails. They fail in different ways, so tell us which kind you have, or send a photo of the data plate, and we plan the visit around it.
Most home generators stand for months between outages, and the first outage after a long gap is when faults show up: petrol gone stale in the carburettor, a battery that went flat in storage, or a standby set whose controller was already in alarm. We check those first, before suggesting any part.
All generator repairs and engine overhauls are carried out on site at your premises. You do not have to load a heavy generator into a car or wait for a workshop. The connection to your house matters as much as the generator: a changeover switch keeps the generator and the mains apart, and we issue and sign the electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for the changeover switch installations we carry out.
More homes now charge a hybrid solar inverter from a generator. When the inverter refuses generator power, the cause can be the generator’s voltage or frequency under load, or the inverter’s generator settings. We measure the generator side so you know which one to fix.

What we work on
Home generators and the connections around them
Petrol portables
Open-frame sets bought for outages: stale fuel, carburettor, recoil, spark and dead-socket faults, repaired at your house.
Inverter generators
Quiet sets for electronics. We test the engine and the fuel system before the inverter module, which is a costly, model-specific part.
Diesel standby sets
Sets with automatic start and changeover on larger homes. Battery, controller, transfer switch and fuel are checked together.
Gas standby sets
LPG and natural gas units such as Generac standby sets: the gas supply, the controller and the battery that starts them.
Changeover switches
Manual changeovers repaired, replaced and installed, with the electrical CoC signed for the installations we carry out.
Generators with solar inverters
We test the generator’s voltage and frequency under load, so an inverter that rejects generator power can be traced to the right side.
The home visit
How a home generator repair works
01
Call or WhatsApp
Send your suburb, a photo of the data plate and what the generator does. Tell us about gate or estate access.
02

Free written quote
You see and approve the price before any work starts, with the parts and labour set out.
05

Which home generator problem do you have?
Find what your generator is doing, then open the guide for it. Each one explains the causes and what we check.
| What happens | Likely cause | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Will not start after months unused | Stale petrol, a flat battery or a varnished carburettor | Generator not starting |
| Starts, then stops after a few seconds | Low oil shut-off, fuel starvation or a choke left on | Starts then stops |
| Runs, but nothing in the house works | Tripped breaker, changeover position, AVR or inverter fault | Not producing power |
| Trips when the kettle or geyser comes on | More load than the generator is rated for | Trips under load |
| Standby set stayed off in a power cut | Battery, controller mode or the automatic transfer switch | Not auto starting |
| Solar inverter will not accept generator power | Generator frequency or voltage drifting under load | Low frequency |
| Lights flicker on the generator | Engine speed hunting or an AVR fault | Unstable voltage |

Common Questions
Questions about home generator repairs
Do you repair generators at my house?
Yes. All generator repairs and engine overhauls are carried out on site at your premises. You do not need to bring the generator to us.
How quickly can you get to my home?
We are open 24/7 and arrive within 1 hour for a breakdown. Servicing is booked for a time that suits you.
What does a home callout cost?
A callout is R400 to R700 in business hours and R700 to R1,400 after hours. The callout fee is only payable if you do not accept the quotation. If you accept the quotation, the callout fee is waived.
Is it worth repairing a small petrol generator?
Usually, when the fault is fuel, the carburettor, the plug or the recoil. When the engine or alternator has failed, a repair can approach the price of a new set, and we tell you that before you spend money.
Can you install a changeover switch with a CoC?
Yes. We issue and sign the electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for the changeover switch installations we carry out. Never connect a generator through a wall socket: it back-feeds the mains and can kill someone working on the lines.
My solar inverter will not take power from my generator. Can you help?
Yes, on the generator side. We measure its voltage and frequency under load. If the generator is within its rating, the inverter’s generator-input settings are the next thing to check with your solar installer.
Can I run my generator in the garage?
No. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which can kill in an enclosed space. Run it outdoors, away from doors and windows, and let it cool before refuelling.
Do you work in estates and complexes?
Yes. Tell us about gate access and any estate rules when you book. For a shared generator run by a body corporate or homeowners’ association, see our body corporate maintenance page.
