The Service
Petrol generators in Gauteng are usually smaller than the diesel canopies on commercial sites: home standby, shop backup, and portable frames that come out when the power goes off. They fail in petrol-specific ways. Stale fuel in the carburettor bowl, a fouled spark plug, a stuck float or a recoil that will not catch are everyday jobs for us, and none of them involve diesel injectors.
Petrol that sits for weeks varnishes the jets and needles. The engine may crank, or the recoil may feel normal, and it never fires. Or it starts, hunts and dies as soon as you open the choke. Those are mixture and spark faults, though we still check the battery first on electric-start units.
We also fix output faults on petrol frames: a tripped breaker on the set, a failed AVR on larger petrol standby units, or dead sockets while the engine runs flat out. They follow the same electrical logic as bigger machines, at a household scale.
We come to homes across Johannesburg, Pretoria and Centurion, and to small commercial premises across Gauteng. We service and repair Honda, Yamaha, Ryobi, Kipor, Mac Afric and Gentech generators. If you have a larger diesel canopy set, our diesel generator repairs service covers it.

Petrol-Specific
Stale petrol gums the jets, dries out the carburettor or floods the bowl after repeated pulls. We clean or rebuild the carburettor and refill with fresh fuel.
A blocked idle jet, a failing fuel tap, a blocked cap vent or a hunting governor kills the engine as the choke comes off. We find which one.
A fouled plug, a cracked cap, a failed coil or a kill switch stuck to earth stops ignition. If the engine cranks with no smell of fuel burning, we start here.
We replace broken recoil springs and worn pawls, and repair starters that only click on electric-start home units.
A tripped breaker on the set, a failed AVR on larger petrol standby units or overloaded sockets leave you without power while the engine runs.
A rich mixture, a dirty air filter or a carburettor still coated from old fuel makes the engine surge and smoke. We clean and set it correctly.
How We Work
We check whether the tank and bowl have usable petrol and whether there is spark at the plug before stripping the carburettor.
We test the float, jets and choke, check the electric start on units that have one, and inspect the recoil on pull-start sets.
If the engine runs, we test the breakers, sockets and, on larger petrol standby units, the AVR, because a healthy engine can still leave the sockets dead.
We confirm it starts without endless choke and that it holds a representative household or shop load.
Storage
Fuel left in the machine causes more petrol no-starts than anything else we see. Heat in a Gauteng garage speeds up the gum that forms in the carburettor bowl. Draining the carburettor before a long idle spell prevents most of these callouts.
Keep petrol and diesel advice apart. A 5 kVA petrol frame and a 100 kVA diesel standby set fail in different ways, and mixing the two is how the wrong parts get ordered.
Drain unused petrol
Empty the carburettor bowl before the set stands for weeks
Spark before carb strip
A fouled plug is cheaper to prove than a rebuilt carburettor
Portable vs standby
Open frames and small canopies share the same petrol faults
Run it monthly
A short monthly run keeps fuel moving and the battery charged
Inverter or Conventional
Petrol generators come in two designs. They are repaired differently, and they suit different uses.
The engine runs at a fixed speed so the alternator produces 50 Hz directly, with voltage held by an AVR or a capacitor. They are usually cheaper per kVA, louder, and better at starting heavy motor loads.
The alternator produces high-frequency power that is converted electronically to a clean 50 Hz output. Engine speed can drop at light load, so they are quieter and use less fuel when lightly loaded. Most are smaller, portable units.
Inverter output is usually cleaner, which suits computers, TVs and chargers. A conventional set with a good AVR can run them too; check the manual for what the manufacturer allows.
Pumps, compressors and power tools draw a starting surge. Check the surge or maximum rating in the manual, not just the running rating, whichever design you choose.
Both share engine faults such as stale fuel and carburettor blockages. Conventional sets add AVR, capacitor and brush faults; inverter sets add the inverter module and electronic throttle control, which are model-specific parts.
Use the size calculator to estimate the load and surge first. Then weigh noise, fuel use at your typical load, the surge you need and the budget.
Common Questions
Your petrol generator will not start because the fuel in the carburettor bowl has gone stale and gummed the jets, or the spark plug has fouled. We check spark and fuel condition first, which usually finds the fault without any engine work.
Yes. We regularly repair portable and small standby petrol units across Gauteng, alongside larger diesel sets. Tell us the brand and whether it cranks or the recoil pulls freely.
Usually yes for fuel, spark and starting faults, because a carburettor clean and a new plug cost far less than a new generator. Replacement makes more sense when the engine has run without oil or the crankcase is damaged. We quote the repair in writing so you can compare the two.
Many petrol faults are inexpensive. As a guide, carburettor cleaning or a rebuild is typically R900 to R2,200 and a spark plug R200 to R500. Starter or output faults cost more. You get a written quote before any work starts.
We service and repair Honda, Yamaha, Ryobi, Kipor, Mac Afric, Gentech and PowerBoss generators, and we repair most other portable and home petrol brands too. Send the brand and model, or a photo of the label, when you book.
Run the generator for a few minutes every month, or drain the carburettor if it will stand unused, and always use fresh fuel. An annual service catches worn plugs, filters and recoil parts before they fail. Our cost guide puts a basic service at R900 to R1,800, and our petrol generator servicing and maintenance page sets out what the visit covers.
They share some faults, such as flat batteries, control problems and an engine that runs with no power. They differ on fuel: diesels have injection equipment and glow plugs, while petrol units have spark plugs and carburettors. So we start the diagnosis in different places.
