Business premises

Commercial standby generators, repaired on site

Commercial generator faults show up at the worst moment. The set did not start when the mains failed, it started but never took the building, or it tripped once the tills, lights and air-conditioning came on. We start from that symptom and test the battery, controller, ATS, fuel and output in turn until we can show you the cause.

Most commercial sets are diesel, with an automatic transfer switch and a Deep Sea, SmartGen or Datakom controller, installed in a plant room, a yard or a basement. Tell us about access, who will meet us on site and whether the mains is off right now, so we arrive ready for the fault.

Once the fault is fixed, a load bank test can prove the set will carry your building before the next outage does it for you; keeping it ready after that is covered on our commercial servicing and maintenance page. We have repaired generators across Gauteng since 2000.

The commercial visit

Diesel standby, automatic start and looking after the set

  • Commercial diesel generator repairs

We fix fuel, starting, cooling and output faults on the diesel sets that carry offices and retail. We service and repair Cummins, Perkins, Caterpillar, FG Wilson and Volvo Penta generators.

  • Standby generator repairs

A set that sits for weeks usually fails on a flat battery, old fuel or a controller that was already in alarm. We check all three before anything else.

  • ATS and automatic start problems

When the set runs and the building stays dark, we test the start signal and the transfer switch together, so you know exactly which one let you down.

  • Generator controller repairs

We read the alarm that stopped an overnight start, trace the circuit behind it and fix the cause, so the set starts next time without anyone at the panel.

  • Servicing and maintenance plans

Booked services, maintenance contracts and SLAs for business premises have their own page, commercial generator servicing and maintenance, so a breakdown visit stays focused on the fault.

  • Load testing

A start in the plant room does not prove the set can run your tenants or tills. A load bank test applies a controlled load and shows whether voltage, frequency and temperature hold.

  • Generator sizes

Most commercial sets fall between about 30 kVA and 500 kVA. Read the rating from the data plate, because the canopy size tells you very little.

  • Commercial generator callouts

Send the suburb, a site contact, the fuel type and the fault. That is enough for us to plan the visit and bring the parts the fault is likely to need.

Running a business generator

What different premises need from a standby set

A business generator is judged on the one day it is needed. These are the points we check for each kind of site.

  • Office and retail standby sets

You usually have a diesel set with automatic changeover. The start signal, the transfer and the battery matter as much as the engine, so we check all three on every planned visit.

  • Body corporates and estates

Your set may run gates, lifts, borehole pumps or common lighting. We work through the managing agent, trustees or caretaker and give notice before any test that affects residents.

  • Schools and facilities

Sets that stand idle through holidays still age. Batteries, coolant and stored diesel deteriorate even when the hour meter barely moves, so we book visits by the calendar as well as by hours.

  • Restaurants and food retail

Fridges, cold rooms and extraction fans draw a surge when they start. We check that your set picks up that load cleanly, because a stalled transfer can cost you a cold room of stock.

  • Emergency repairs for businesses

When the set fails during an outage, call 082 057 4605 with the suburb, a site contact, the fuel and the alarm. We are open 24/7 and arrive within 1 hour. After-hours callouts cost R700 to R1,400, waived if you accept our quotation.

  • What a quotation needs

Send the make, model and kVA, the running hours, the last service date, access details and who will be on site. A data-plate photo on WhatsApp saves time for both of us.

Servicing and maintenance

Planned work for facilities managers and body corporates

This page is about breakdowns and faults. Planned servicing, contracts and records have their own page, so here is what you will find there.

  • Planned servicing around trading hours

Services are booked for early mornings, evenings or weekends, when the building can manage without backup for a while.

  • Contracts and SLAs per site

Customised maintenance contracts and SLAs, written for each building after we assess the set, with no fixed packages or prices.

  • Records for landlord, trustees and insurer

Each planned visit is recorded, from the running hours to the parts fitted and the readings taken, ready to pass on.

For shared sets at sectional-title schemes and estates, see body corporate generator maintenance.

Common Questions

Questions about commercial generator repairs

What is a commercial generator repair?

A commercial generator repair fixes the standby generator that powers a business premises, such as an office, shop, restaurant, complex, warehouse or workshop. Most of these are diesel sets with automatic start and an ATS.

How quickly do you respond to a commercial breakdown?

We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and public holidays, and arrive within 1 hour for breakdowns. Call or WhatsApp 082 057 4605 with the suburb and the fault. Maintenance contract clients are scheduled ahead of new callouts.

Can you repair a breakdown after hours?

Yes. We are open 24/7, so a set that fails in the evening, overnight or over a weekend is attended then. After-hours callouts cost R700 to R1,400. The callout fee is only payable if you do not accept the quotation. If you accept the quotation, the callout fee is waived.

Do you work on body corporate and complex generators?

Yes. We repair and maintain shared standby generators for sectional-title schemes and estates, with access arranged through the managing agent, trustees or caretaker. Our body corporate maintenance page explains contracts, records for trustees and how to compare quotes.

Is commercial the same as industrial?

No. Commercial covers business premises and the standby set for that building. Industrial covers large three-phase plant on factories and production sites, often with prime-power duty and planned shutdown windows.

The generator did not start when the power went off. Can you look at that?

Yes. We test automatic start, the battery and the ATS first, because those three are the usual reasons a standby set stays silent when the power goes.

Do you service commercial generators as well as repair them?

Yes. Planned servicing and maintenance have their own page: commercial generator servicing & maintenance.

Can you test whether it will carry the building?

Yes. A load bank test applies a controlled load and records voltage, frequency and temperature as the set works. Our cost guide puts load bank testing at R2,800 to R5,500, and your written quote gives the exact figure.

Which brands do you repair?

We service and repair Cummins, Perkins, Caterpillar, FG Wilson, Volvo Penta, Deutz, SDMO, Kohler, Mahindra and Yuchai generators, Stamford alternators and Deep Sea controllers. We also work on SmartGen and Datakom controllers. Send a photo of the data plate and we match parts before we visit.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Centurion, Midrand, Randburg, Roodepoort, the East Rand, the West Rand and the Vaal, including the business parks and industrial areas in those regions.
