Ricardo diesel
We repair and service generator sets powered by Ricardo diesel engines across Gauteng. The set builder usually supplies the alternator and controller, so we read the engine plate and the generator nameplate to plan the visit.

Ricardo-badged diesel engines are fitted to generator sets by many builders, so the alternator and controller can be any of several makes. We take the model and kVA from the data plates before we start.
We then test start, fuel, cooling, controller and output in turn.
We change Ricardo engine oil and filters to the engine plate schedule, and check the battery on standby installations.
We record the alternator and controller makes at each service, since they rarely carry the Ricardo name.
Ricardo-badged diesel engines built in Weifang, China, are fitted to open and silent sets by many builders. Specification sheets pair the four-cylinder K4100D with 25 to 30 kVA sets, the R4105ZD with 50 kVA sets, and the six-cylinder R6105AZLD, a 6.75-litre engine running at 1,500 rpm, with sets of about 100 kW. Model names vary between suppliers, and the same engine can appear as R4105ZD or ZH4105ZD, so we go by the plate on your engine.
If a Ricardo genset will not crank, we test the battery under load and the starter, and check the panel for a low-oil or other shutdown that blocks the start.
If it cranks without firing, we bleed air from the fuel system, check the filters and test the fuel solenoid. Sets fitted with a fuel preheater have that circuit checked when they start badly in cold weather.
We confirm the filter and lift pump on the Ricardo engine on site.
When a Ricardo engine smokes or labours under load, we check fuel delivery and the air filter, and test the injectors only if those pass.
Ricardo gensets use different controllers depending on the builder. We read the alarm text from the panel fitted.
When the engine runs but the load stays on the dead mains, we trace the ATS and the transfer signal from the panel, which is usually another maker’s.
The Ricardo engines on these sets are water-cooled, so overheating sends us to the coolant level, the radiator core, the fan belt and the water pump.
With engine speed steady at 1,500 rpm, we measure the output at the breaker, then the AVR and the alternator fitted by the set builder.
We check the Ricardo engine, the alternator and the controller against the data plates.
Book a repair when your Ricardo set will not start, overheats, smokes or loses output.
Book a service when the running hours are due. Between services, check the coolant level with the engine cold.
A Ricardo set can idle cleanly and then drop speed when a large load switches on. We check fuel delivery under load and compare the load with the set’s kVA before blaming the engine.
A fuel or cooling repair is usually worthwhile. Major engine work on a high-hour genset needs a comparison with replacement.
If the engine, the alternator and the panel all need major work, the quote sets the repair against the cost of a new set of the same size.
Your cost depends on where the fault is and parts for your engine and panel. An oil and filter change typically costs R600 to R1,400, and a starter motor R1,400 to R4,000.
The Ricardo genset faults we see most often, and our first checks.

Air in the fuel, clogged filters or the fuel solenoid.
Coolant level, a blocked radiator, the fan belt or the water pump.
The ATS, or the panel’s transfer signal.
Speed at 1,500 rpm first, then the AVR and the alternator.
We take the model and kVA from your data plates.
We test the engine, alternator and panel, whichever makes they are.
