Caterpillar diesel
We repair and service Caterpillar diesel generators, whether you call yours a CAT or a Caterpillar, from office standby sets to plant-room installations across Gauteng. We read the EMCP or other panel, test the engine and fuel system, and give you a written quote before any work.
Independent service and repair: Caterpillar is a trademark of its owner, and ProService Generator Repairs is not a Caterpillar dealer or agent.
Callout fee waived when you accept our written quote. 1-year workmanship guarantee. See prices

CAT and Caterpillar are the same make, and we handle both on every visit. An office standby set and a plant generator can share the badge but differ completely in access, cooling and load, so we read the data plate on the skid or enclosure before we discuss capacity.
We split each job into engine, fuel, controller and output, and you see each of those as its own line on the quote.
A planned CAT service covers engine oil, filters and coolant, plus a battery load test on standby installations. Where an ATS is fitted, we check the transfer as well.
For CAT sets in basements and plant rooms, we note the ventilation, and we record belt condition, the radiator face and charger output on sets that rarely run.
We take on Caterpillar diesel sets from compact standby units to plant installations where access allows. The plate gives us the kVA and controller type, which decide the tools and parts we bring.
When a CAT set will not crank, we check the battery, starter engagement and whether the panel shows a shutdown or a remote emergency-stop inhibit.
When it cranks and will not fire, the fault is usually fuel delivery. We confirm any low-coolant or low-oil shutdown on the panel before ordering a fuel pump.
Filter types, lift pumps and injection systems vary between CAT installations, so we diagnose the fuel system on the engine actually fitted. Fuel calibration is specialist work and stays with us.
If filters keep blocking soon after replacement, the tank is usually contaminated. We look for water and sediment when the engine hunts or blows white smoke under load.
We read EMCP, DSE and other CAT controller displays exactly as shown, photograph the alarm text and trace it for that model.
On CAT standby systems, we diagnose transfer faults at the ATS interface: the start command, the engine-running signal and whether the breaker actually moves.
Temperature shutdowns on long runs usually come from low coolant, a restricted radiator or the fan drive. Enclosed skids often overheat because of dust-packed fins.
We measure output on a running CAT set after confirming governed speed, and we quote AVR and alternator work separately from the engine.
Engine, panel and output each get their own line on your CAT job card.
Book a repair when your CAT set fails to start during an outage, trips on load, shows a panel shutdown or loses voltage while the engine runs.
Book a service when the hour meter says oil, filters and coolant are due and the set still exercises normally on its routine test.
A CAT plant generator can hold its speed at idle and then lose frequency when the building load steps in. We compare governor response, fuel delivery and alternator load to find which one is falling short.
A CAT engine with moderate hours and a fuel or cooling fault is usually well worth repairing. Major crankcase work on a high-hour plant set is a bigger decision.
If the engine, alternator and EMCP all need major work, we discuss replacing the complete skid, using the measurements from our inspection.
CAT pricing depends on whether the fault is in the engine, fuel system, EMCP panel or alternator, and on parts lead times for your model. Cooling system repairs typically cost R1,800 to R5,000; controller repair or reprogramming runs R3,500 to R14,000.
The CAT faults we see most often, and the first things we check.
Standby battery, starter or a panel inhibit after a low-oil or coolant alarm.
Fuel filter, air in the lines or the solenoid, which we test before replacing a pump.
Restricted airflow, low coolant or a fan that cannot keep up at full load.
Alternator, AVR or main breaker, tested once engine speed is stable.
Start signal or interlock faults, even when the diesel itself is healthy.
Whatever name is on your set, we bring the same diagnostic approach.
We plan basement skids and rooftop standby sets differently, because access and airflow differ.
We record EMCP and other alarms from the screen and trace them for your model.
ProService Generator Repairs services and repairs Caterpillar generators, with the fault diagnosed and a written quote given before any work.
Yes. ProService services and repairs Caterpillar generators. CAT and Caterpillar are the same make, and we work on both across Gauteng.
Yes. We service and repair Caterpillar diesel generators on site and give you a written quote before any work.
No crank points to the battery, starter or a panel inhibit. Cranking without firing points to fuel delivery or an active shutdown.

Yes. We change oil, filters and coolant, test the battery and check the transfer, following the engine schedule.
Yes. We inspect the coolant, radiator face, fan drive and canopy airflow before ordering major parts.
Yes. We confirm engine speed first, then test the breaker, AVR and alternator.
Yes, where access allows. We note the ventilation and the remote emergency-stop position on plant-room sets.
